A $2.1 million settlement has brought closure to a wrongful-death lawsuit filed against the village of Ridgewood by the family of 13-year-old Soo Hyeon Park, a boy who drowned in Graydon Pool in 2008.
As discussed in this previous article, Forman Holt Eliades and Youngman was named Special Appellate Counsel, working with the family’s attorneys in defense of the original verdicts on appeal before the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division after the 2011 jury decision was partially vacated.
“This was a tragic and important case. It was a great privilege to work with such outstanding trial attorneys to obtain a meaningful settlement for our clients, grieving parents who had suffered the worst loss imaginable.” – Joseph M. Cerra, attorney
Soo Hyeon Park, his sister and parents had just arrived from South Korea when they went to visit friends in Ridgewood on July 15, 2008. As he swam to a dock in the deep end of the pool with the two sons of his host, the boy began struggling to stay afloat and went under.
None of the nine lifeguards on the stands at the time saw the boy while he was in distress; a previous jury found the village of Ridgewood was negligent in its supervision of Graydon Pool.
